Certification of Welding and Brazing Procedures
The qualification of a welding procedure arises from the need to verify the validity of a specific welding procedure, certifying the mechanical characteristics of the joint based on the type of base material, filler material, and welding process used. It demonstrates the welding capabilities of a company.
Services Offered
Welding
International Weld performs the certification of welding and brazing procedures in compliance with major national and international standards and codes, including:
- UNI EN ISO 15614 | Part 1 to 13;
- UNI EN ISO 15613 | Qualification based on pre-production welding tests;
- UNI EN ISO 15612 | Qualification through the adoption of unified welding procedures.
Brazing
Brazing certification can be carried out according to general standards such as:
- UNI EN 13134 | Strong brazing, procedure qualification.
For refrigeration applications, standards including:
- UNI EN 14276 part 1 | Pressure equipment for refrigeration systems and heat pumps | Vessels | General requirements
- UNI EN 14276 part 2 | Pressure equipment for refrigeration systems and heat pumps | Piping | General requirements
Reinforcement Steels (B450C)
For companies welding reinforcement steels, qualification is done in accordance with the standard:
- UNI EN ISO 17660-1 and 17660-2
Codes and Specifications
Alternatively, qualification can be performed according to various codes or specifications, including:
- ASME BPVC Section IX | Pressure Components
- AWS D 1.1/D 1.1M D1.6 | Structures
- Customer Specifications
Certification Process
The certification process for welding and brazing procedures involves the following steps:
1. Acceptance of the economic offer.
2. Submission of the certification application.
3. Qualification activities, including a practical test and the required laboratory tests.
4. Deliberation and issuance of the certification.
The qualification activity involves the execution of one or more sample tests representative of the production, overseen by qualified inspectors from I-WELD.
The choice of the representative sample test is often dictated by various conditions such as the execution location, available equipment, joint geometry, acceptability criteria, material thicknesses, and diameters to be welded, as well as accessibility.
Destructive and non-destructive tests required by standards are carried out at laboratories accredited by I-WELD. If all tests are positive, a qualification procedure report is issued.
Qualification activities can be conducted directly at companies or at facilities equipped both technically and for safety.

Application opportunities
The validity of a Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR) is unlimited. The qualification of a welding procedure is a technical requirement found in numerous technical standards.
- Civil | In civil applications, CE marking of products according to EN 1090-1 has been mandatory since July 2014. The standard requires welding procedures to be certified according to international standards such as ISO 15614.
- Industrial | For pressure vessels, Directive 2014/68/EU PED requires the qualification of welding procedures and personnel to be carried out by a notified body or a recognized third party. International Weld is a Recognized Third Party.
- General | ISO 9001 also requires the proper validation of special production processes. In this case, the constructor is implicitly required to follow a technical standard (e.g., ISO 15614) or qualify the process against an internal standard (supported by technical evidence and not self-declarations).
